Signs of Poor Ratings Websites for Banks

As with all major decisions, you do not want to make a decision about your bank without doing sufficient research first. You need to know without a shadow of a doubt that you have found a bank that is right for your needs and has a strong financial history. That said, it is not always easy to go through the various bank ratings and reviews websites to find the best quality ones.

First, it is important to understand that the factors that affect bank ratings can change quite often. A bank that was strong in 2008 is not necessarily going to be equally strong in 2011. In fact, in today’s industry, the bank may not even exist in 2011 because it may have been sold or bought out. You need to find a source for bank reviews that is current and timely, not outdated. If the last review listed was year or so ago, find a different resource.

A ton of advertisements, particularly poorly included advertisements, can be another sign of a poor bank ratings and reviews website. Companies that are looking more for ad revenue than for providing helpful information are best avoided. That said, companies are going to need to make money somehow, and ad revenue is the only way they can do so without charging you for access to bank ratings. So do not avoid sites that have ads, but do avoid sites that overwhelm you ads and pop ups. They are usually not focused on quality reviews.

Another sign to watch for is a bank reviews website that has significantly different scores for a particular bank. While not all sites are going to have identical reviews, the facts about the bank are not going to change, so the reputable sites are going to have very similar ideas about the bank. If one offers absolutely glowing reviews about a poorly rated bank, you have to wonder how carefully they did their research or whether or not they were paid to improve the rating from the bank itself.

Read the Bank Ratings Information

Another way to find out information about these sites and determine if they are good or not is by reading the bank ratings information. How did the site score the particular bank? Saying it is a five-star bank is great, but only if you understand what “five star” actually means.

A website that has a detailed account of how they rate banks is going to be a good resource. A website that does not disclose this information or is particularly vague may not be the best resource. You will be able to tell much by reading this information, so don’t just locate it – take the time to actually read it. This will also help you in understanding why the different websites have such different reviews for the same bank.

That said, websites do not always make this information easy to find. You might have to do a little digging to find out how the ratings are formulated, but it is digging that is well worth doing.
